Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra
Even though classical music had been popularized in Armenian since 1924 by the Yerevan Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, which later served as a basis for the orchestra of the Yerevan Opera Theatre, founded in 1932, the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra was officially founded in 1941.
In 1941, an eminent Armenian conductor Constantin Saradjev assumed the position of the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the APO. Many distinguished conductors followed Saradjev: Michael Maluntsian, Ohan Durian, Michael Terian, Ruben Vardanian, Aram Katanian, David Khanjian, Valeri Gergiev, Vahagn Papian, Michael Avetisian and Loris Tjeknavorian. Eduard Topchian, a young, but already established and popular conductor, has been with the orchestra since 2000.
Since its foundation, the APO performed most of the Western European, Russian, and Armenian symphonic repertoire.
Among the many gifted celebrities that have graced the Aram Khachaturian concert stage are: David Oistrach, Lev Oborin, Sviatoslav Richter, Mstislav Rostropovich, as well as the world's leading conductors, including Carlo Zecci, Kurt Mazur, Alexander Melik-Pashaev, Franz Konvichini and others.
In addition to Reingold Glier, Aram Khachaturian and Dmitri Kobalevski, several important 20th century composers have had their works performed by the orchestra.
